A fresh ear or nose piercing is a beautiful expression of personal style but during the early stages of healing, it also requires thoughtful care. One of the most important things to avoid is swimming, no matter how inviting the water may seem.
Why Swimming Isn’t Safe for New Piercings
While a healing piercing may look fine on the surface, it’s still an open wound. Pools, hot tubs, oceans, lakes, and even bathtubs can expose your piercing to bacteria, chemicals, and irritants that can disrupt healing or lead to infection.
- Chlorinated pools and hot tubs can dry out the skin and introduce harsh chemicals to the healing tissue.
- Natural bodies of water often carry microorganisms that are invisible to the eye but harmful to new piercings.
- Bathwater, although seemingly safe, can also contain bacteria and is best avoided during the initial healing period.
How Long Should You Wait?
For both ear and nose piercings, we recommend waiting a minimum of 3-8 weeks before swimming. Healing times vary from person to person, so it’s important to listen to your body and consult your piercer if you’re unsure.
If Swimming Is Unavoidable
Should you find yourself in a situation where swimming is necessary:
