How to Care for Your New Piercing and Keep It Happy & Healthy

    June 20, 2025 | Nadia Al-Amoudi

Whether you're wondering how to clean a nose piercing, care for ear piercings, or understand healing times, we’ve got you covered. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about aftercare for ear and nostril piercings, from cleaning routines and what to avoid, to spotting signs of infection.

    Healing Timelines

Knowing how long a piercing takes to heal helps you care for it properly. Timelines vary depending on placement and your body’s unique healing process.

    • Earlobe: 4-6 months
    • Helix, conch, tragus, flat, rook: 6–12 months
    • Daith: 9-12 months
    • Nostril: 6-12 months

Some may heal quicker or slower based on lifestyle, health, and aftercare habits.

    Daily Cleaning Routine

Consistent, gentle cleaning is key. Use a sterile saline solution twice daily to support healing and prevent infection.

    • Wash hands thoroughly before touching your piercing.
    • Apply saline directly twice daily.
    • Let the area air dry or blow dry with hair dryer. Avoid towels or cotton that may carry bacteria.
    • For nostrils, use a saline-soaked cotton swab to gently remove buildup. Avoid moving the jewelry

    What to Avoid During Healing

To protect your piercing and promote smooth healing:

    1. Don’t twist or rotate the jewelry.
    2. Don’t sleep on a fresh ear piercing. Try a travel or piercing pillow.
    3. Don’t remove or change jewelry until fully healed.
    4. Avoid alcohol, peroxide, ointments, and tea tree oil in the area.
    5. Avoid swimming in all bodies of water for atleast 3-8 weeks.
    6. Keep makeup and skincare away from the piercing site.

    Spotting Signs of Infection

Mild redness or tenderness is normal early on, but consult a professional if you notice:

    • Severe or lasting swelling and pain
    • Thick, green, or foul-smelling discharge
    • A bump at the site
    • Fever or flu-like symptoms

    The Importance of Downsizing

We start with longer posts to allow for swelling. Once it subsides (around 6-8 weeks), downsizing to a shorter post is essential.

    Why it matters:

    • Prevents irritation and shifting
    • Reduces snagging risks
    • Supports comfort and long-term healing
